Have you applied for your Director ID yet?
All company directors are now required to apply for a director identification number (director ID).
Directors appointed for the first time on or after 5 April 2022, must apply for their ID prior to their appointment. Directors appointed prior to 1 November 2021 must apply for their ID number by 30 November 2022.
What is the Director Identification Number?
The director ID number is a unique identifier that you keep forever. It’s free to apply and you only need to apply once.
The ABRS and ASIC anticipate that the new Director ID system will:
- prevent the use of false and fraudulent director identities
- make it easier for external administrators and regulators to trace directors’ relationships with companies over time
- identify and eliminate director involvement in unlawful activity, like illegal phoenix activity
How to apply
The fastest way to get a director ID is to apply online using the myGovID app. If you can’t get a myGovID, then there are also options to apply over the phone or using a paper form.
You must apply for your ID number yourself. The reason for this is you need to prove your identity when you apply. ASIC is responsible for enforcing director ID offences set out in the Corporations Act 2001. It is a criminal offence if you do not apply on time, and it can also result in large fines.
We can help you gather the documents you need to verify your identity, like Notices of Assessment.
You can apply now for your director ID on the ABRS website.
What happens next
Once you have your director ID, keep it safe until you need to use it. You can share it with us and we will record it securely in our software.
You don’t need to provide your ID number to ASIC unless otherwise directed. When the ASIC companies register is transitioned to ABRS in the future, your number will need to be linked to the companies that you are a director of. We’ll keep you up to date with any changes that may affect you.
